Google has just launched the Nexus 7 tablet in India via the Google Play Store. The device is priced at Rs 15,999 for the 16 GB version.
For users who buy the device from the Play Store, shipping will begin from 5 April and all shipments will be delivered via Fedex/Aramex in 3-7 business days. For more details click here. Google’s Play Store states that the device will be shipped to most locations in the country, however it won’t ship to PO boxes and/or military addresses for now.
We take a look at how the Google Nexus 7 stacks up in competition to the other most important 7-inch tablet in the market, the iPad mini.
Price: In terms of price, the Google Nexus 7 wins hands-down. The 16GB tablet costs only Rs 15,999, where the iPad mini starts at Rs 21,900 for a 16 GB WiFi only version.
However the iPad mini does have versions with cellular connectivity, something that the Nexus 7 does not offer. Also the iPad mini has 32GB and 64GB versions available in India for Rs 27,900 and Rs 33,900 respectively.
The 64GB Wi-Fi + Cellular version is a hefty Rs 41,900.
In terms of price the Nexus 7 has the edge. However remember, the tablet only has 16GB space and no cellular connectivity. If you can live without the 3G connection, the Nexus 7 is likely to appeal to you.
Screen and Processor The iPad mini has a 7.9 inch screen (diagonally) with a screen resolution of 1024×768 pixels making it around 163 pixels per inch. The processor is a dual-core A5 processor clocked at 1 GHZ.
The Nexus 7 definitely has a superior screen to the iPad mini with 1280×800 HD display that comes to 216 pixels per inch. The device also has a a 1.3GHz Nvidia Tegra 3 quad-core CPU, which includes a 12-core Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). It has 1GB RAM.
The Nexus 7 also has a faster processor and a sharper screen.
Camera: If a camera is a must have in your 7-inch tablet, then the Nexus 7 might be a big disappointment. The Nexus 7 has a 1.2-megapixel front camera but no rear camera.
The iPad mini comes with a 5 megapixel rear camera and a 1.2 megapixel front FaceTime Camera which is a big plus in a 7-inch tablet.
OS The iPad mini ships with Apple’s iOS 6. The Google Nexus 7 runs Jelly Bean aka Android 4.1 and unlike other altered versions of the OS this one is pure Google.
If you are a Google/Android junkie, the Nexus 7 tablet will end up being your choice.
Battery: The iPad mini offers up to 10 hours battery life on just Wi-Fi and up to 9 hours on cellular data.
The Nexus 7 has lesser battery life and offers up to 8 hours of power on active usage.
