Google buys Word Lens maker to strengthen 'Translate'

 

Tech giant Google has reportedly bought the Word Lens maker Quest Visual, to boost its Translate feature.

The Word Lens translates printed words from one language to another with your smartphone 's video camera, in real time.

According to CNET, Quest Visuals representative said that by joining Google, they can incorporate their technology into Google Translate's broad language coverage and translation capabilities.

However, both the companies kept mum about the deal.

Just days after reports revealed thatNational Security Agency (NSA) in the US actively looked at what people read on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation announced on its website that it would implement HTTPS for logged-in users.

The foundation, a non-profit organization, manages Wikipedia. The S in HTTPS stands for secure.

Two days ago, Guardian newspaper revealed that with the help of a tool called XKeyscore, NSA was monitoring web users who accessed Wikipedia, the world's 7th most popular website.

Wikimedia said that to start with, it would offer HTTPS connection to all logged-in users from August 21. It will then gradually roll-out HTTPS for all users as well as implement additional security measures to make it harder for governments to snoop on Wikipedia users. However, it did not specify any deadlines for the additional security measures.

Following the Guardian report, Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, had revealed on Twitter that the website was planning to switch to HTTPS from HTTP but there were a few bugs that had delayed the process.

"Our current architecture cannot handle HTTPS by default, but we've been incrementally making changes to make it possible. Since we appear to be specifically targeted by XKeyscore, we'll be speeding up these efforts," Wikimedia said on its website.

On Friday Wales announced the Wikimedia decision and tweeted, "I challenge the rest of the industry to join us. Encryption is a human rights issue."

HTTPS is more secure compared to HTTP. Websites using HTTPS establish a secure connection between their servers and the user's computer and greatly minimize the privacy risk. The secure connection means that third parties like government agencies or internet service providers (ISPs) can not read the content of data that a website and its users exchange.

A study has revealed that the world’s most popular four-digit ATM PIN number combinations, like 1234, are the most dangerous combinations and can be guessed easily.

The Huffington Post reports that there are 10,000 different possible four-digit ATM PIN numbers, but almost 11 percent of PINs are the most easiest to crack.

A study by Data Genetics has discovered the most dangerous PIN numbers by analyzing 3.4 million passwords.

The top 10 most commonly used PIN numbers found out by the study are 1234, 1111, 0000, 1212, 7777, 1004, 2000, 4444, 2222, 6969

The top 10 most common passwords make up over 20 percent of all of the passwords found, the report added.

Meanwhile, 26.83 percent of all passwords could be guessed by attempting the top 20 most popular combinations.

The study also revealed that four digit numbers starting with 19, for 19th century, are also bad passwords.

Universal Serial Bus, the connectivity standard so ubiquitous the world has long stopped caring about the derivation of the USB acronym, has just been upgraded to 10 Gbps.

The upgrade comes in the form of a .1 release, USB 3.1, that is backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and 2.0 kit. The new speed will only be achievable with kit using USB 3.1, but such products will work just fine in older USB ports.

The move to USB 3.1 was foreshadowed back in January 2013, so is no surprise, not even to Intel, whose Architecture Group veep Alex Peleg says in the canned statement (PDF) noting the new spec that “The industry has affirmed the strong demand for higher through-put, for user-connected peripherals and docks” and “Intel is fully committed to deliver on this request.”

We mention Chipzilla because it's been pushing its own Thunderbolt I/O standard as an alternative to USB. Those efforts have been less than astoundingly successful, as peripheral-makers have not adopted the standard, leading PC-makers like Acer towalk away because there's no point adding a feature users don't want.

Thunderbolt's still faster than USB 3.1 – the second version of Intel's baby hums along at 20 Gbps – and it has daisy chaining tricks that USB doesn't match. USB's retort is to point to the scoreboard of signed-up, productive, peripheral-makers. Thunderbolt's list mentions fewer than 120 products using the technology.

Average Internet Speed Increases in India..!

The average Internet speed in India is likely to jump by over 40 per cent to 1.8 Mbps in the next 12 months on the back of investments in high-speed fibre network and affordable data plans, cloud computing firm Akamai Technologies said in a report.

In the first quarter of 2013, India saw an average connection speed of 1.3 Mbps (megabytes per second).

"Based on current industry growth trends, we expect a 40 per cent to 50 per cent increase in connection speed over the next 12 months. This translates to anything between 1.7 to 1.8 Mbps," Akamai Technologies Director of Products for Asia Pacific and Japan Bruno Goveas said.

The country witnessed an average speed 1.0 Mbps in the first quarter of 2012. "Thus, there has been a 0.3 Mbps increase over the last one year," Goveas added.

The global average connection speed continued to grow in the first quarter of 2013, increasing 4 per cent to 3.1 Mbps, said Akamai Technologies' State of the Internet report.

Goveas said connection speeds to the last mile (at home) have increased in the recent months, given the investments by telcos, cable operators and service providers in laying high-speed fiber direct to homes and apartments and offering high connection speed data plans, especially in urban areas.

"Many users now get online via mobile phones. High speed data plans are very affordable with some innovative data plan offerings from service providers. Hence, we expect to see a rise is high speed connections," Goveas added.

Corporates are upgrading their bandwidth speeds to keep up with their growth and demand and it also helps that bandwidth is getting cheaper, it added.

"We expect growth in speeds from users in Tier II and Tier III cities as well, and not just Tier I, given the investments from telecom companies , and with users accessing the Internet from mobile phones," Goveas said.

INDIA is focusing on Unmanned Army….!

 

Future warfare scenario requires multiple functionality unmanned technologywith human intelligence interface and ability to coordinate multiple systems in consonance, DRDO Director GeneralAvinash Chander said here today.
Space, cyber space and asymmetric dimensions of warfare are assuming greater importance than the traditional ones and advancement of various critical technologies, sensors, robotics, communication, advanced materials and electronics are paving way for development of unmanned warfare systems, he said.
In future, there is scope for developing unattended sensors, micro UAVs, robot sentry and autonomous underwater vehicles, Chander said.
He listed various unmanned systems used for ground applications, underwater and aerial applications and said, Unmanned Combat Areal Vehicle (UCAV), solar power UAV, aerostats would be next generation air warfare (fully autonomous mission) and future robotic warriors will be assigned well defined tasks.
Chander said that new military requirement for future robotic systems include intelligence, mobility, manipulation, battle scene awareness and friend-foe identification capabilities among others.
Elaborating on multi-dimensional battle space in the era of unmanned warfare, Chander said achieving these objectives demands high level of interaction and collaboration among scientific community, academia and industry.
Chander, Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister, also laid emphasis on emergent requirement to be proactive in policy making and to take a firm stand on developing and employing advanced unmanned systems, while summarising the national and international status of the defence unmanned technologies during a seminar on 'Future War Unmanned: Technology Challenges' at Defence Laboratory here, which was part of the 21st 'Prof Daulat Singh Kothari Memorial Oration'.
The DRDO director general also highlighted that in foreign countries, private industries are developing humanoids for single applications.
Unmanned technology on mine laying and breaching, protection operation, logistics support, recce and support, combat operation, casualty evacuation and IED detection and handling disposal were discussed in the programme, attended by the union culture ministerChandresh Kumari and others.
Charting out the future path, Chander said levels of intelligence, ability to sense environmentand to make decisions and control actions are the few challenges ahead.

Just as expected, the government of India has conjured a list of proposed specifications for the Aakash 4 and with a view to stay true to its word, the HRD department has covered aspects that could give other affordabletablets in the market a run for their money. Furthermore, compatibility with 2G, 3G and 4G networks with voice calling is an attribute that has been solicited for the device for the first time, while it will also facilitate data connectivity through external dongles. The ministry demands that the slab should run a version of Android Jelly Bean not below 4.2.1 and it should be dual bootable with various Linux distributions via an external SD card. If the government has its way, the Aakash 4 will come bundled with 1GB of DDR3 of RAM.

There will also be an internal storage capacity of 4GB, the shortfall of which will be compensated by a built-in microSD card slot supporting expansions of up to 32GB. As for the battery life, users should be able to reap at least 4 hours of video playback or 5 hours of web browsing time. Setting standards for the tablet’s design, the HRD department has requested for a device weighing not more than 500 grams and measuring under 7.5” x 5” x 0.75” in dimensions.

By the looks of it, the Aakash 4 will be taking a major leap away from its predecessors, most probably for the better. But what remains to be seen is whether interested stakeholders will be able to meet these demands without straying away from the low-budget aspect

Entire Android Line-Up Can Now Download Google Keyboard

 

The highly regarded Google keyboard, gesture typing and all, is finally coming to the entire Android line-up by way of the Google Play store.  Previously only available on the Nexus line, Google’s keyboard was sorely missed by consumers that opted to purchase other Android devices, like Samsung or HTC phones.  Now, any device running on Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0) or later will be able to install the keyboard as an app.

The stock Google keyboard offers voice typing, dictionaries for 26 languages, and word suggestion/completion tools.  Most notable among its assets, though, is gesture typing.  When you swipe your finger in one smooth motion across the keys, the gesture tool determines the most appropriate word.  The more you use it, the more intuitive and accurate the system becomes.

Similar gesture-type programs have been baked into other devices besides the Nexus, but none have received the same level of praise as Google’s stock keyboard.  Third party keyboard apps have also attempted to replicate the experience as a downloadable add-on, but none of them have been as successful as Google.

This latest release is in keeping with the Android philosophy of openness and customization.  With many customizable software options available across the entire range of Android devices, and powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon processors integrated into many leading smartphones, consumers have a wider breadth of viable choices than ever before.

Blackberry is launching Q10 tomorrow in INDIA

Canadian handset maker BlackBerry, which lost a huge market share last year, is looking to tap the Indian smartphone market with improved strategies focusing on solutions and security architecture and by opening up its messenger service to other operating systems.
BlackBerry is also expected to launch its QWERTY smartphone Q10 in India on June 6 and more devices soon.
“India has a tremendous head room for growth,” Sunil Lalvani, managing director, BlackBerry India, who joined last month said.
With less than 10% of India’s active mobile subscribers currently being smartphone users, the company is betting big on this opportunity.
“We needed a completely new mobile system completely, a new platform and that’s what got us to launch BB10,”Lalvani said.
“Today we have Q10 coming up, we have more devices in the BB10 category,” he said, adding the company does not want to be perceived just a smartphone player but a leading player of mobile computing.
“How we are going about in the India market -- we already have devices and we have various devices in terms of BB10 platform category. Our BB7 platform will continue because there is a lot of untapped market in India and BB7 has a lot of potential. Second pillar is we are going to ride on its network infrastructure and the third DNA is our security,” he said.
The firm also announced it will be making its messenger service (BBM) available for Android and iOS soon.
It’s going to be a revenue stream for us, Lalvani said, adding last year a third of the company’s revenue came from services and software. According to the firm, among almost 60 million global BBM users over 10 billion BBM messages are delivered everyday.
“Awareness level needs to be increased. What we have started doing is across stores in India where we have 5,000 retail-points, users can walk in show their device at least to verify what OS you have. It is like a routine health check-up,” he said, on the company’s marketing initiatives.

Sony’s waterproof tablet launched @ Rs 46,990

 

Sony on Wednesday launched Xperia Tablet Z with a price of Rs 46,990. Though the price is rather steep, the company believes that the tablet's slim and waterproof design will help it compete with other Androidtablets and Apple's iPad.
Xperia Tablet Z uses a Qualcomm quad-core processor running at 1.5GHz. It has 2GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage (extra 16GB microSD card will be bundled with the device) and a 10-inch screen with FullHD resolution(1920x1200pixels). The tablet is powered by Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean). Sony is saying that the tablet will be updated to Android 4.2 soon. The device has a 6,000 mAh battery.
Just like the Xperia Z smartphone, Sony's new tablet is water-resistant and dustproof. It packs in an 8MP primary camera and a 2.2MP front camera. Another unique feature of the tablet is IR sensor, which would allow users to control their television with it. Incidentally, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One that were recently launched in India also have this feature.
Despite its large screen, the tablet weighs just 495 grams. It is 6.9mm thick.
A senior Sony India executive told TOI that Sony is not going after the numbers with Xperia Tablet Z. "It is a premium product and we hope to attract customers who value great design and unique features like water resistance," he said. "We also feel that people who like their Xperia Z phone will love this tablet."
We checked out the device at its launch event in Delhi. Built using matte plastic that feels soft totouch, the tablet is incredibly light. It is also very thin and easy to hold. The design pattern is similar to that of Xperia Z phone. The tablet has a shape of rectangular box and unlike iPad or the latest Galaxy Tabs doesn't have rounded corners.
