Huge Plane Crashes Into Bridge’ Video is a Face book Scam

 

A viral Facebook post purporting to have a video of an accident saying “Huge Plane Crashes Into Bridge!” is a survey scam.

There’s no video of a massive plane hitting a bridge. The photo on the hoax shows a plane smashing the bridge–complete with fire and smoke. It also shows a person falling off the bridge.

The photo appears to have been created by a digital artist, but it appears the man falling off the bridge was inserted into the image later.

There’s also several YouTube videos uploaded with the same “Huge Plane Crashes Into Bridge” headline. One shows a fake video that appears heavily edited to show a plane crash, dated in 2012. Another simply shows the same image used in the Facebook posting and offers no context, except for misspelling the word “bridge” as “bride.”

When one clicks on the Facebook post, it redirects the user to a fake Facebook page that asks users to share or “like” the video before viewing it. This ensures that the scam is spread far and wide.

After the video is shared, the user is then asked to fill out a fake survey. It asks for personal information, like one’s mobile phone, address, and e-mail. It’s recommended not to input this information as it can lead to spamming.

When people fill out the information, the creators of the scam then make money.

Such scams have proliferated in recent months on Facebook, including one of a “Most Terrifying Accident Ever” with a fake photo of a roller coaster, and one claiming to have a video of the “World’s Largest Snake” in Brazil. They simply redirect the user to a fake site that asks one to share the post and fill out a fake survey.

A fake video is going viral on Facebook claiming the “MOST TERRIFYING ACCIDENT EVER!” about a woman falling 220 feet on a roller coaster, but it’s just survey spam.

“MOST TERRIFYING ACCIDENT EVER! Woman Falls 220ft Roller Coaster,” the whole message reads. “Click on the Picture to watch the most terrifying video footage ever!”

It shows a still image in a ride about 20 feet off the ground with a play button, indicating there’s a video.

There’s no video and the link just takes you to a page saying you must “like” or share the post before you watch it, which spreads the post further.

There are some reports saying the video contains a virus but it appears it just sends users to a fake survey site. It is worth being cautious, however, as similar scams are known to install malware.

The image in the post was taken from a Wired magazine post about a “fake broken swing.”

Similar Facebook survey scams claim there’s a video a fatal car accident, the world’s largest snake, and a shark eating a person in the ocean. They also ask the user to repost it to view, but there’s no videos and it just goes to survey questions.

The bogus survey sites make money for people who spread the fake Facebook posts.

WHAT IS WASP IN ‘INDIA VS NEWZELAND’ CRICKET ?

It has long been the bane of cricket fans to be asked in the middle of a game who is winning.

Now thanks to University of Canterbury (UC) research, Sky Sport are able to provide an answer to the `who’s winning’ question.

In the one day internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 games shown on Sky Sport this summer, statistical information will include answers from the WASP—the `winning and score predictor’.

In the first innings, the WASP gives a predicted score. In the second innings, it gives a probability of the batting team winning the match. This is based on models developed by UC PhD graduate Dr Scott Brooker and his supervisor Dr Seamus Hogan.

“It is really pleasing to be able to turn on the TV and see one’s research being put to use,” Dr Hogan said today.

“The WASP is not a forecast that could be used to set TAB betting odds. Rather they are estimates about how well the average batting team would go against the average bowling team in the conditions under which the game is being played given the current state of the game.

“It is a measure of how well the teams have done to that point, rather than forecasts of how well they will do from that point on.

“The models are based on a database of all non-shortened ODI and Twenty20 games played between the top eight countries since late 2006. The first-innings model estimates the additional runs likely to be scored as a function of the number of balls and wickets remaining. The second innings model estimates the probability of winning as a function of balls and wickets remaining, runs scored to date and the target score.’’

Dr Hogan said the estimates were constructed from a dynamic programme rather than just fitting curves through the data. Using a novel technique Dr Hogan and Dr Brooker developed, they have been able to estimate ground conditions from historical games and so control for that confounding effect in their estimated models.

In the games on Sky, a judgement is made on what the average first innings score would be for the average batting team playing the average bowling team in those conditions, and the models’ predictions are normalised around that information.

“At this stage, I believe this judgement is just a recent historical average for that ground, but the method of determining par may evolve.

“More graphics around the use of WASP throughout the season are expected on Sky, with the system fully up and running by the time of the international matches against England later this summer.’’

The New I10 Grand

Hyundai on Tuesday (September 3) launched the Grand i10 hatchback, which is positioned between the i10 and the i20.

The 7 Worst thing about IOS 7

 

.Yesterday, I wrote The 7 best things about iOS 7 to give you my favorite changes to Apple's mobile OS. But the update is not perfect by any means and I definitely have a few gripes with the new design, some of the apps, and other things that have not been improved. Read my full review of iOS 7 here .

I still recommend iOS 7 to anyone with an iPhone 4S or later and the latest iPad, but there are definitely a few things you're going to have to live with if you upgrade to the latest OS.

Game Center is bright and colorful, but it doesn't really reflect gaming in my opinion.

Game Center
Game Center already suffers from a lack of features such as being able to see what your friends are currently playing, or ways to communicate with other players to team up. It's supposed to be a place where you can setup multiplayer games and find new games based on your interests, but it does neither very well at this point. In other words, Game Center needed an update for iOS 7, but all it got was a facelift.

Even more troubling to me, however, is the facelift it received. I play games quite a lot on desktop, console, and of course on iOS. I play fast-paced racing games, gritty first-person shooters, epic adventure games, MMOs, and even some classic arcade compilations from the 80s. I consider myself an authority on the subject. Do you know what doesn't go with any of those gaming genres? Rainbow bubbles.

Sure, Candy Crush Saga is one of the most popular games of all time, but Game Center shouldn't let that be what drives the new design scheme. I'd like to see a Game Center icon and app design that is inclusive of all game types, with some race cars, guns, puzzles, soccer balls, and other things you find in games. Rainbow bubbles just aren't what I think of when I want to play a game and I don't think I'm alone in that opinion.

Slow on older devices
This is easily my biggest complaint of everything listed here, probably because I own an iPad 2 and I know there are a lot of people out there with older iOS devices.

On my iPad 2, iOS 7 works, and the device is still useable, but it is far from perfect. Everything from opening apps, to bringing up the keyboard in Notes, to even just opening the settings is slower than it was in iOS 6. Every time I do any of these things I have to wait a few beats longer to see the results. The overall feeling is much more muddy than it was in iOS 6, which is saying a lot because the iPad 2 was already a little slower than the new iPads so any degradation in speed is going to be that much more noticeable.

It's also important to note that older devices don't get all the same features (no AirDrop for iPhone 4S, for example), but I think if iOS 7 is not optimized for a device or slows it down, it shouldn't be available for that device.

iOS 7 is extremely colorful and I like the new look, but maybe people should be able to tone it down a bit.

Let me change the design a bit
I like the new design. I really do. I know the that part of Jony Ive's vision was a simpler layout, bright colors, and flattened icons. That was clearly the point of changing the whole look. But I've heard enough from the chorus of commenters from my iOS 7 review to know that it isn't for everybody. Not everyone wants a rainbow blast from the home screen every time they open their iOS device. Perhaps if there were two or three icon sets to choose from, people could pick the one they liked best. Then, if you get sick of your current look, you could always switch it up for a whole new experience. Even if people could just tone down the current icon colors it would be better. It doesn't seem like it would be a hard thing for Apple to do and it would definitely make getting used to the new design much easier.

Slow animations
Even when you're on the latest devices, the zooming animations for opening and closing apps are a bit slower than they were in iOS 6. I actually like the zooming effects when I'm not opening and closing apps quickly, but it takes longer, for example, from the moment you hit the home screen button to when you actually get to the home screen. It's not a long wait, certainly, but as you browse around your iPhone or iPad, the slower animations add up.

The love affair with the color white
Part of the redesign is the use of more white space. I get it and I even like it. But the thing I noticed about it is that when I'm using my iPhone or iPad at night, the excessive use of white is tiring for my eyes.

Whether I'm looking at Notes, Reminders, or especially the Calendar, the bright white is too much for night-time viewing. I know I can easily adjust the brightness via the Control Center, but I feel like I shouldn't have to.

No design updates for other Apple apps
iOS 7 is supposed to be a complete redesign, and while all the core apps got the new design treatment, what about the other Apple apps? If you go to Podcasts, iBooks, or Find My Friends, you're going to see the same skeuemorphic, real-world designs you did in iOS 6. I guess it's not that big of a deal, but I wonder why Apple would change so many things, but stop short of giving the iOS 7 look to all of its apps. Maybe we'll see redesigns of these apps in a future minor update.

Sill no landscape mode for iPhones
If you have an iPad, you know that even when you're using the home screen, you can turn your iPad sideways and the Dock, along with all the icons will turn to landscape with you. Why not on the iPhone? With so many apps and games that can easily switch to landscape, it would be much less jarring to come out of a game and have the home screen facing whatever way you're currently holding your iPhone. It seems like it would have been an easy fix for iOS 7, but we're still locked in portrait mode.

Voyager 1 spacecraft has become the first manmade object to breach interstellar space and leave the solar system.

It is currently 18.3 billion km away from the sun and 18.2 billion km from earth 36 years after it was launched.
The historic feat has been described as important as "Ferdinand Magellan's first circumnavigation of the earth, the first planetary flyby in 1962, when NASA's Mariner 2 went by Venus and Neil Armstrong's first step on the moon''.
A NASA statement on Friday said Voyager 1 is now the most distant human made object.
"We've never entered the interstellar medium before, or actually sampled interstellar space, before now. It is another first in the history of exploration,'' it said.
The spacecraft is believed to have entered the interstellar space on Aug 25, 2012.
This conclusion was drawn after combining data about the changes in the charged particles observed, the magnetic field data and the new plasma data from April to May.
Voyager project scientist Ed Stone said they needed time to analyze these observations and make sense of them. "But we can now answer the question we've all been asking -- are we there yet? Yes, we are.''
New data indicates Voyager 1 has been traveling for about one year through plasma, or ionized gas, present in the space between stars.
Voyager 1 and its twin, Voyager 2, were launched 16 days apart in 1977.
Both spacecraft flew by Jupiter and Saturn. Voyager 2 also flew by Uranus and Neptune. Voyager 2, launched before Voyager 1, is the longest continuously operated spacecraft.
Voyager mission controllers still talk to or receive data from Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 daily, though the emitted signals are currently very dim, at about 23 watts -- the power of a refrigerator light bulb.
"Voyager has boldly gone where no probe has gone before, marking one of the most significant technological achievements in the annals of the history of science, and adding a new chapter in human scientific dreams and endeavors," said NASA's John Grunsfeld.
Scientists do not know when Voyager 1 will reach the undisturbed part of interstellar space, where there is no influence from the sun.
They also are not certain when Voyager 2 is expected to cross into interstellar space, but they believe it is not very far behind.
Voyager 1 is now in a new environment just beyond the plasma (the solar wind) emitted by the sun, and immersed in the plasma of interstellar space.
Plasma is the densest and slowest moving of charged particles in the space.
"It is the most important marker that distinguishes whether Voyager 1 is inside our solar bubble, which is inflated with the plasma that streams outward from our sun, or outside in interstellar space, which was generated when nearby giant stars exploded millions of years ago,'' said NASA.
"Voyager 1 is still feeling some solar magnetic and charged particle effects, so it can still feel the influence from our sun.''

Display & Body

The display on the iPhone 5S remains the same at 4.0 inches with a pixel density of 326 ppi. As expected, the design is also the same as the iPhone 5.

64 bit A7 chip and M7 motion co-processor

The iPhone 5S comes with the new A7 chip which Apple claims to be the world’s first 64 bit desktop-class architecture in a smartphone. Apparently Huawei Ascend D Quad launched in Feb 2012 last year also boasted of a 64 bit chipset.

M7 motion coprocessor gathers data from the accelerometer, gyroscope and compass to offload work from the A7 for improved power efficiency. Apple has allowed developers’ access to the new CoreMotion APIs that take advantage of M7, thus allowing them to create better fitness and activity apps.

Touch ID – Fingerprint Scanner

Built into the home button, Touch ID uses a laser cut sapphire crystal, together with the capacitive touch sensor, to take a high-resolution image at about 550ppi of your fingerprint. Touch ID will allow you to authenticate Appstore purchases and app updates besides providing security lock to the iPhone 5S.

8MP iSight Camera with True Tone Flash

The iPhone 5S boasts of a new 8MP iSight camera, which features a larger f/2.2 aperture and a new, larger sensor with 1.5μ pixels for better sensitivity and low-light performance. The camera has capability to shoot 10 frames-per-second in burst mode, and 120 frames-per-second slow motion video at 720p.

The dual LED Flash, called the True Tone Flash by Apple adjusts colour and intensity for over 1,000 combinations to give better images under dark light conditions.

The new iPhone 5S now comes in three new different colours called Gold, Silver and Space Grey. Apple has also introduced new leather covers for the device with 6 colours to choose from i.e. beige, black, blue, brown, yellow and red.

iOS 7

The iPhone 5S comes with iOS 7, Apple’s latest redesigned UI along with the option to download the iWorks apps Suite for free which includes iPhoto, iMovie, Pages, Numbers and Keynote apps that are otherwise paid for apps.

Availability and Pricing

The iPhone 5S is priced at $199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB on two-year contract in the US, while you can expect it to be priced at around Rs. 50,000 in India for the 16GB version and upwards for the others.

The iPhone 5S will be available starting Sep 20th in the US, while it is expected to be made available in India sometime during mid-November.

While the iPhone 5C will be made available in the US on the 20th of September, it is expected to arrive in India only by the mid week of November.

Note: iOS 7 upgrade will be available for the entire Apple devices starting from iPhone 4 & iPad 2 from September 18th. But the iWorks apps are free only for newly bought devices with iOS7 installed on it.

Apple Launches Iphone 5C and 5S today….!

Apple fans have their eyes keenly fixed on California today where industry professionals claim the new iOS 7 and iPhone 5s will be revealed

Later today Apple will host its biggest public event in recent months at its home in Cupertino California.

It is believed the US technology giant will unveil the next version of the software that runs its iPhones and iPads - iOS 7.

But the event, which is scheduled for this evening, will also see the debut of at least one new iPhone.

And it will see details of when iOS 7 will be available for owners of iPads and older iPhones, experts claim.

Apple is promising that the announcement "should brighten everyone's day". But just what are we likely to see?

You can get the latest build-up, updates and rumours for the event on our live blog, but in the meantime we asked industry experts at gadget site T3 what they think will be revealed.

iOS 7: Definitely

Perhaps one of the few things we can be certain about finding out tonight is when we'll be able to get our hands on iOS 7.

The update is the biggest since Apple introduced the iPhone back in 2007. The most obvious part of the update is the facelift. Gone are faux-realistic buttons, replaced by flatter, brighter colours.

Many of the existing features of the software have been redesigned. The changes are so drastic; Apple has reportedly cancelled all leave from the middle to the end of September to cope with an increased number of questions from iPhone owners.

iPhone 5S: Definitely

If there is one device that will definitely make an appearance, it is the next generation iPhone.

We're 99 per cent sure that the next iPhone will be called the iPhone 5S. Like the iPhone 4S before it, the upgrade will be more about power and features than looks.

Chances are you'll have to wait till September 2014 before we'll see a new look for the iPhone.

So if Apple is focusing on specifications and features, what can we expect?

T3 says: Upgraded quad-core A6X processor, with 2GB of RAM and storage options of 32GB, 64GB and 128GB.

What does Apple have up its sleeve this year? Well, thanks to a series of leaks, we can be pretty sure it's a fingerprint scanner.

It might not have the same wow factor as Siri, but it does have the potential to become just as – if not more – useful.     

T3 says: The iPhone 5S will come with a fingerprint reader, a more powerful camera – at least 13 megapixels – a dual-LED flash, NFC and full 4G support.

Apple will also drop the 16GB mode, adding a new 128GB model at the top end.

iPhone 5C: 99 per cent

Chances are Apple will unveil its new 'budget' handset at its keynote tonight as its "one more thing".

However, there is a nagging voice in the back of our heads that say Apple may hold off the unveiling of the iPhone 5C until its Chinese launch event – especially if – as has been rumoured – the C ends up standing for China.

But aside from the will they, won't they question, what can we expect from Apple's budget iPhone?

According to a number of analysts, the iPhone 5C will be an iPhone 5 in a plastic shell and with full 4G support. That would mean it retains the iPhone 5's 4-inch screen, A6 processor, 1GB of RAM and 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options.

T3 says: The iPhone 5C will be unveiled tonight as a redesigned iPhone 5, with a plastic back that comes in five colours. In addition, Apple's event in China will be to announce a partnership between it and China Telecom – the world's largest mobile network – not an exclusive iPhone model for the Chinese market.

Price

We genuinely have no idea how much the iPhone 5S will cost. The best guide is last year's prices for the iPhone 5. SIM-free, an iPhone 5 cost £529 for the 16GB version, £599 for the 32GB version and £699 for the 64GB version.      

T3 says: When it comes to the iPhone 5S, our best guess is that it will cost roughly the same as the iPhone 5 at launch. What will happen if Apple announces a 128GB version is anyone's guess.

It may choose to retire the 16GB model and simply shift the pricing of the phones, so the 32GB would cost £529, the 64GB £599 and the 128GB model £699.     

As for the iPhone 5C, expect to pay between £300 and £400 for the budget model once you factor in VAT and other costs. At those prices, expect it to be offered for free on contract.

Launch date

Rumours have put the launch date for Apple's new iPhones as Friday, September 20.

A September 20th launch would mean iOS 7 would likely become available for existing iPhone owners from September 18.

In the past, Apple has released the update to iOS two days before the new iPhone launches.

T3 says: Neither of those dates seem unrealistic to us. I think we can safely say that the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C will arrive in the UK on September 20th, with iOS 7 becoming available two days before that on September 18th.

What else can we expect?

Apple has developed a reputation for surprising people. The late Steve Job's favourite line was "one more thing". Indeed, every Apple keynote between 1998 and Job's death in 2011 saw him utter those famous words before announcing a new product.

But will Apple have a "one more thing" this year? Without a doubt – but will it be the iPhone 5C, or could Apple have something else up its sleeve?

New iPads

It is almost one year to the day that Apple unveiled the iPad 4 and iPad Mini. So does that mean Apple will be unveiling the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2? Probably not.

As it stands, we're about a month or two behind the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in terms of the type of leaks we're seeing. There have also been concerns over whether or not Apple would be able to secure enough high resolution screens for the launch of the iPad Mini 2 before Christmas.

As such, we're unlikely to see any new iPads later today. However, that's not to say that Apple doesn't have anything up its sleeve for later in the year.

T3 says: Probably not. Maybe November though.

New Macs

Rumours emerged earlier this week that Apple is planning another keynote next month to announce the release date for the next version of its desktop operating system OS X. Part of that rumour suggests that Apple may choose to refresh some of its existing Mac products at the same time, as well as announce the launch date for its futuristic looking Mac Pro.

T3 says: Next month, yes, but today? No.

Apple smart TV

Rumours about an Apple TV have been around that long that if they were a person, they'd be starting school soon.

Will we see an Apple made smart TV? No. Will we see a new Apple TV set top box? That's more likely. But even if we do, it's likely it will only be a minor update and nothing to write home about.

T3 says: Maybe.

The iWatch

Rumours first emerged that Apple was working on a smartwatch last year. They were further stoked by various analysts suggesting that the company was investigating the possibility of moving into wearable technology.

The question now is can Apple afford to wait before it shows off what it is working on? Probably not, but will that stop them from holding off announcing it until it is ready to do so? No.

T3 says: No.

Something else...

The iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C have been at the centre of an unprecedented number of leaks. Under Steve Jobs, Apple had a fierce-some reputation for secrecy. Even now, almost all of the leaks have come via the companies that make the iPhone on behalf of Apple.

But could it be part of some plan by Apple to distract us while it cooks up something truly special?

T3 says: Unlikely, but who knows?

New Communication System in Space to be Tested by NASA

 

Nasa will attempt a major breakthrough in space communications by using laser, for the first time, between the earth and the moon and vice versa. If successful, it could one day lead to 3-D high definition video transmissions in deep space becoming routine.

The experiment will be carried out once Ladee reaches the moon.

According to Nasa, Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration's (LLCD) main mission objective is to transmit hundreds of millions of bits of data per second from the moon to earth. That is equivalent to transmitting more than 100 HD television channels simultaneously.

Since NASA first ventured into space, with the Apollo programme, it has used a radio frequency communications platform.

So, Americans don't need any Gold with them to print Dollars. They will print Dollars on white papers as they like.

Google goes down for 5 minutes, Internet traffic drops 40%

Google suffered an outage late on Friday night, though you might not have noticed -- it only went down for five minutes. During that brief window, Internet traffic around the world dropped by a massive 40 per cent, according to Web analytics firm GoSquared, Sky News Online reports.

All Google's services were unavailable for those five minutes, including Google Search, YouTube, and Google Drive.

Commenting on the 40 per cent drop in Web traffic, GoSquared developer Simon Tabor said, "That's huge. As Internet users, our reliance on Google.com being up is huge."

Google's Apps Dashboard showed all its services were hit by the outage. But the company wouldn't be drawn on what caused it.

"We're aware of a problem with Gmail affecting a significant subset of users," a note on the Apps Dashboard read. "The affected users are able to access Gmail, but are seeing error messages and/or other unexpected behaviour."

A later message read: "Between 15:51 and 15:52 PDT, 50 per cent to 70 per cent of requests to Google received errors; service was mostly restored one minute later, and entirely restored after four minutes." (That would've been just before midnight Friday night UK time.)

When contacted by Sky News Online, a Google spokesperson said they had no comment beyond the Dashboard message.

Phil Dearson, head of strategy for ad agency Tribal Worldwide, estimated the blackout had cost Google around £330,000. He said it was a "massive surprise" for all of Google's services to go down at once.

But it's not the first time it's happened. Google suffered a similar blackout in 2009. And just a few months ago, Google Drive went down.

But not all apps start their life inside of Apple’s walled garden—some have launched on Android first and have yet to make their way to iOS. While iPhone users are often first to experience the latest games, Android users get apps that fully automate their phones and predict what they want to type next.

Here are five apps that Android users can brag about to their iPhone-toting friends.

Tasker helps make your smartphone actually feel smart. The app lets you create profiles that automatically execute certain tasks when specific criteria are met. For instance, you can have your phone automatically launch the music app when you plug in headphones, or have your phone silence itself when you get to the office. There’s really no limit to the types of profiles you can create, and there are entire websitesdedicated to Tasker profiles if you’re not up to the task of creating one yourself.

The app does have a bit of a learning curve, though, so I’d recommend going throughthe tutorial or looking one up online to get down the basics. There’s a lot of trial and error involved when building your first Tasker profile, but there’s an unmatched feeling of joy when all your hard work finally pays off.

If you’ve ever created a file on your iPhone or iPad, you know what a huge pain it can be to move it off of the device. You have to either plug it into iTunes to retrieve it or hope that you have an app installed that works with the app you used to create the file in the first place. It’s way more convoluted than it should be.

While I’m not saying Android is any better when it comes to creating documents, it certainly is better at managing them. Astro File Manager gives you access to all of the data stored on your phone. With AirDroid, you don’t even need to touch your phone in order to use it. The app lets you access your phone remotely by going to web.airdroid.com and scanning the QR code on the page. The free version of the service lets you do things like reply to text messages, organize your photos, and play music, while the paid version lets you remotely access your camera and helps you locate a missing or stolen device.

If you’re not one to carry a Micro-USB cable everywhere you go, AirDroid also lets you transfer content to and from your phone without ever having to plug it into your computer. (Just make sure you’re on Wi-Fi if you’re planning on moving over gigabytes of data.)

So why exactly would you want to access your phone on your computer? Aside from all the benefits I listed above, the number one reason to do it would be because you left your phone out of arm’s reach and are too lazy to get up to answer a text message. And there’s nothing wrong with that.

SwiftKey is a third party keyboard app that adapts to the way you write by learning which words and phrases you use most often, allowing for a better typing experience because your phone isn’t constantly autocorrecting “Yo” into “to”. After a while, you get to the point where you can mash your thumbs randomly on screen and have SwiftKey predict exactly what you wanted to say, punctuation and all. Neat.

For those of us out there that find typing passé, SwiftKey has a feature called Flow that lets you glide your fingers over keys to form words and sentences (kind of likeSwype). SwiftKey also supports multiple languages simultaneously, so you don’t have to go into the settings every time you want to switch the keyboard language from English to French, and the app comes with several themes to change how the keyboard appears on screen.

Wikipedia is going Secure…{https.for logged in Users]

Just days after reports revealed thatNational Security Agency (NSA) in the US actively looked at what people read on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Foundation announced on its website that it would implement HTTPS for logged-in users.

The foundation, a non-profit organization, manages Wikipedia. The S in HTTPS stands for secure.

Two days ago, Guardian newspaper revealed that with the help of a tool called XKeyscore, NSA was monitoring web users who accessed Wikipedia, the world's 7th most popular website.

Wikimedia said that to start with, it would offer HTTPS connection to all logged-in users from August 21. It will then gradually roll-out HTTPS for all users as well as implement additional security measures to make it harder for governments to snoop on Wikipedia users. However, it did not specify any deadlines for the additional security measures.

Following the Guardian report, Jimmy Wales, the co-founder of Wikipedia, had revealed on Twitter that the website was planning to switch to HTTPS from HTTP but there were a few bugs that had delayed the process.

"Our current architecture cannot handle HTTPS by default, but we've been incrementally making changes to make it possible. Since we appear to be specifically targeted by XKeyscore, we'll be speeding up these efforts," Wikimedia said on its website.

On Friday Wales announced the Wikimedia decision and tweeted, "I challenge the rest of the industry to join us. Encryption is a human rights issue."

HTTPS is more secure compared to HTTP. Websites using HTTPS establish a secure connection between their servers and the user's computer and greatly minimize the privacy risk. The secure connection means that third parties like government agencies or internet service providers (ISPs) can not read the content of data that a website and its users exchange.

However, the government agencies, hackers and internet service providers can still collect this data and possibly read it if they can break the encryption.

Initially, only banks and other organizations mindful of cyber security risks used HTTPS. But gradually email service providers and e-commerce websites started using it on their login pages. Currently, popular websites like Google, Facebook and Twitter use HTTPS but the majority of websites, including big ones like Yahoo! still rely on HTTP.
