3D Ears by US Scientists

With a 3D printer, a petri dish and some cells from a cow, Princeton University researchers are growing synthetic ears that can receive - and transmit - sound.

The scientists send bovine cells mixed in a liquid gel through the printer, followed by tiny particles of silver. The printer is programmed to shape the material into a "bionic ear," and forms the silver particles into a coiled antenna. Like any antenna, this one can pick up radio signals that the ear will interpret as sound.

The 3-D ear is not designed to replace a human one, though; the research is meant to explore a new method of combining electronics with biological material.

"What we really did here was actually more of a proof of concept of the capabilities of 3D printing," said Michael McAlpine, the professor who led the project. "Because most people use 3D printing to print passive objects - things like figurines and jewelry."

After it's printed, the 3D ear is soft and translucent. It is cultivated for 10 weeks, letting the cells multiply, creating a flesh color and forming hardened tissue around the antenna.

Manu Mannoor, a graduate student who worked with McAlpine on the project, held up a petri dish in a lab at Princeton last week to show how the process works. The dish was filled with liquid and a partly cultivated ear, and Mannoor said the cells were secreting a matrix, the space between cells that exists in organisms.

"They make their own living space," Mannoor said.

McAlpine and his team demonstrated the antenna's ability to pick up radio signals by attaching electrodes onto the backs of the ears in the printing process. When they broadcast a recording of Beethoven's "Fur Elise" to a pair of fully cultivated ears, the electrodes transmitted the signal along wires to a set of speakers, and the music flowed out clear and without interference.

Although the new research is just one iteration in the field of cybernetics - an area that looks at combining biology with technology - McAlpine said the research could lead to synthetic replacements for actual human functions, and to a sort of electronic sixth sense.

"As the world becomes a more digital and electronic place, I think ultimately we're going to care less about our traditional five senses," he said. "And we're going to want these new senses to give us direct electronic communication with our cellphones and our laptop devices."

Just as expected, the government of India has conjured a list of proposed specifications for the Aakash 4 and with a view to stay true to its word, the HRD department has covered aspects that could give other affordabletablets in the market a run for their money. However, we cannot guarantee that the contract of manufacturing the fourth generation slate will indeed fall on Datawind’s lap.

The proposal starts with outlining the prerequisites for an onboard processor, providing a list of minimum scores that the CPU is supposed to obtain on AnTuTu, Quadrant Standard and a host of other such benchmark apps. It then moves on to the tablet’s GPU which should at the very least, support visuals at 720p resolution. The slate will most definitely repeat history and boast of a 480 x 800p or a higher definition screen which should ideally stretch as much as 7 inches diagonally.

Additionally, the proposal covers support for a USB storage device, keyboard and mouse. Furthermore, compatibility with 2G, 3G and 4G networks with voice calling is an attribute that has been solicited for the device for the first time, while it will also facilitate data connectivity through external dongles. The ministry demands that the slab should run a version of Android Jelly Bean not below 4.2.1 and it should be dual bootable with various Linux distributions via an external SD card. If the government has its way, the Aakash 4 will come bundled with 1GB of DDR3 of RAM.

There will also be an internal storage capacity of 4GB, the shortfall of which will be compensated by a built-in microSD card slot supporting expansions of up to 32GB. As for the battery life, users should be able to reap at least 4 hours of video playback or 5 hours of web browsing time. Setting standards for the tablet’s design, the HRD department has requested for a device weighing not more than 500 grams and measuring under 7.5” x 5” x 0.75” in dimensions.

By the looks of it, the Aakash 4 will be taking a major leap away from its predecessors, most probably for the better. But what remains to be seen is whether interested stakeholders will be able to meet these demands without straying away from the low-budget aspect

• Now again you will prompted to enter the same password for confirmation.

• Retype the password and press enter.
